Universities


Bangalore University is one of the largest Universities in India.  Started as a Nucleus of Science centre of Mysore University, it was endowed with the status of  a University in 1964.  Though originally intended to be a Federal University, comprising of leading institutions of higher education in the city, it eventually emerged as an affiliation University.  It grew in size and variety enormously in a short time.  Bangalore University commends student strength of nearly 3,00,000 having nearly 400 colleges with the combination Arts Science and Commerce, Management, Computer Science, Education, Physical Education, Law and Hotel management are the faculty which comes under its purview.  The University has 3 constituent colleges, 45 Post Graduate Departments and 2 Post-Graduate Centres affiliated to it.  With its main campus at Jnana Bharathi, Bangalore University is serving Bangalore urban and rural districts, Kolar and Tumkur districts through affiliated colleges.  Tumkur University will take away the colleges in that district when it becomes fully functional.  The University has responded to the growing needs of society and added new courses in Bio-Technology, Microbiology, Computer Applications, Fashion Design and Apparel Technology, Tourism Administration, Finance Accounting, International Business, Yoga, etc. Although the initial focus of the humanist scholars in the university was the discovery, exposition and insertion of ancient texts and languages into the university, and the ideas of those texts into society generally, their influence was ultimately quite progressive.
